What domains can be hosted on Server101 ?
We can host any type of domain.

Do you charge me if I want to use my existing domain with my hosting account ?
There is no additional charge for adding your own domain to your hosting account.

What is the difference between a domain and web hosting ?
Web hosting is the provision of allocated space on a server that has a permanent connection to the Internet. This allows people from all over the world to see your website 24/7.

A domain is a unique name with an extension(.com .net) that you register for yourself, your business or organization. These domain names are addresses which typically point to websites on web servers. Server101 offers you a courtesy domain youraccount.server101.com but most customers choose to register their own domain companyname.com. Server101 offers domain names from us$15.00 per year. Click here for more information about registering your domain.

How long will it take for my account to become active ?
Your account is created immediately. You can then start uploading your website, creating email accounts etc. The courtesy domain, http://member_name.server101.com will be viewable on the web in an hour. However if you have a domain you would like to delegate this will take 24/48 hours for the domain to propogate to your new host, Server101.

What is the difference between a web host (IPP) and an ISP ?
An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company that provides internet access via dialup and broadband connections. An IPP (Internet Presence Provider) or more commonly know as a Web Hosting Company provides the servers which websites are kept, maintained and served from.

What payment methods do you accept ?
The most common form of payment is credit card. Other payment types such as wire transfer or cheque can be accepted. Please email sales@server101.com for details as conditions apply.

Is there any minimum contract I have to sign to ?
No. You select the terms most suited to your circumstances. The rates vary to the length of term selected.

Do you force banner advertising on my website ?
No, that is common practice for free web hosts.

Do you offer dial-up internet access ?
No, we specialise in web hosting services. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) offers internet access and connection services.

How can I move my website to Server101 without it going offline ?
Getting started with your Server101 website is very straight forward requiring only a couple of steps to be followed. The first one would be to sign up for the plan and terms of your choice at http://www.server101.com/join/

Your account will be activated immediately and you will be sent instructions on how to upload your website to your server space.

The final step in transferring would be delegating your domain to our servers. This will be the longest process for the transfer, as it takes time for your domain changes to propagate to all areas of the Internet. It is recommended you keep your current account active until the delegation process is complete(24-48 hours) so as to minimize any downtime. While your domain is being delegated, you can use the courtesy domain we give you, http://member_name.server101.com to test your site.

Do you offer discounts to non profit/charity organizations ?
You should find that our plans are already well discounted with little room for further discounts. For special consideration, send a request to sales@server101.com.

I have a website but I don't know how to move it to Server101, can you help me ?
Yes we can do that for you if you are moving from another web host. Send an email to support@server101.com for details.

Can I resell the space within my hosting account ?
All hosting accounts have been fashioned around a certain price. The main components being bandwidth and server load that each account takes on a shared hosting server. If we were to allow this then we could not guarantee the level of quality and service we currently offer.

If you are going to have multiple accounts, you can sign-up under our re-seller program to take advantage of our generous re-seller discounts. Find out more about reseller discounts

Can I use my own shopping cart software with my Server101 account ?
For sure. As long as it does not require ASP or MS Access. Most common shopping carts use PHP, mySQL and CGI which we can support. For any queries send an email to support@server101.com.

Will you take control of my domain if I move to Server101 ?
No. The domain is solely controlled by the registered owner (Registrant).

Do I get a domain (business.com) included with my hosting account ?
A virtual domain of accountname.server101.com is included with all hosting accounts. If you would like to use yourowndomain.com, you can register a domain here.

Is there a limit to how much I can update my website ?
No, you can update your website whenever you like.

   Do you support RealMedia ?
We do support RealVideo & RealAudio mime-types. However, live content streaming is not supported on shared hosting accounts. Please email for details about a dedicated server.

Can I use Coldfusion to design and maintain my website ?
No, we do not support Coldfusion.

Can I use Drumbeat to design and maintain my website ?
No, we do not support Drumbeat.

Can I use Java/Servlets on my website ?
We do not currently support JSP pages as they can be resource hungry and are not viable in a shared hosting environment. We usually recommend that customers wanting to use Java servlets go on their own dedicated server for enhanced reliability and security for their Java environment. You can request a dedicated quote here.

You can of course use Java Applets, as they run through your browser and not the server.

Do you support WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) ?
   Yes.

Do you support ASP or Microsoft Access Database ?
Currently we do not run Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Servers so ASP and Access Database are not available. Our servers, like the majority of web servers, are UNIX based for maximum reliability and there is no native support for ASP or Access.

Our customers achieve database interactivity with the web using PHP or Perl which are more powerful and robust alternatives to ASP. You can also find many more free pre-written scripts at sites such as www.cgi-resources.com

If ASP is your only option, the main issue will be finding a reasonably priced NT host. You will always pay higher rates for NT servers due to the increased workload in keeping them running.

However, we do support FrontPage 2002 Extensions for Unix, which will need to be enabled in the Member Services Section for your account, prior to loading your site.
